Exploring the Cons of AI

As mentioned in this post, https://www.chinopeak.com/2025/03/pros-of-ai-today.html, we have been given a few powerful tools in our hand. AI is a promising technology yes we get that. But let's dive a little about it. Is it all good? We are going to weight the cons if they are really worth it.

It's the buzzword on everyone's lips, promising to revolutionize everything from healthcare to how we order pizza. While the potential benefits are undeniable, it's crucial to acknowledge the less glamorous side of AI – the potential downsides and ethical dilemmas that demand careful consideration.

Let's delve into some of the significant cons of relying on AI.

Job Displacement and Economic Disruption

Perhaps the most widely discussed concern is the potential for AI-driven automation to displace human workers. Repetitive tasks, data entry, and even some analytical roles are vulnerable. This could lead to widespread unemployment and exacerbate existing economic inequalities, creating a need for significant societal adjustments and retraining programs. The speed of AI development may outpace the speed that society can adapt. This is definitely one of the buzzing topics among online forums. Will AI replace job opportunities for people? Well, maybe if we become dumber 🤣

Bias and Discrimination

AI systems are trained on data, and if that data reflects existing societal biases, the AI will perpetuate and even amplify them. As discussed on my post about pros of AI, it is just a curve fitting program, so it means in general, if the curve is going downward, the prediction will definitely go that way. This can lead to discriminatory outcomes in areas like loan applications, hiring processes, and criminal justice, reinforcing unfair treatment of marginalized groups.

The phrase "garbage in, garbage out" is very relevant in this case.

Lack of Transparency and Explainability

Many AI algorithms, especially deep learning models, operate as "black boxes." It's often difficult to understand how they arrive at their decisions. Yes there are some that are open source but the most advanced ones are not.

This lack of transparency raises some concerns about accountability and fairness, particularly in critical applications where human lives are at stake.

The inability to explain an AI reasoning makes it difficult to correct errors and to find the root cause of some problems that may arise.

Dependence and Loss of Human Skills

This is what I can say is the most significant threat to us. Largely relying on AIs.

Over-reliance on AI could lead to a decline in human skills and critical thinking abilities. As we delegate more tasks to machines, we may become less capable of performing them ourselves, creating a dependence that could be problematic in the event of AI failures. The human ability to adapt to new situations may diminish if AI is relied upon to solve all problems.

Conclusion

Addressing these cons requires a multi-faceted approach involving responsible development, robust regulation, and ongoing ethical discussions. By acknowledging the shadow side of AI, we can work towards harnessing its power while mitigating its potential risks, ensuring that it benefits all of humanity.

Intelligence is still dependent on us. Wether we use it or it uses us.

What LLM to use?

Introduction It's been a few years since I started using large language models (LLMs) in the form of chat agents such as ChatGPT, Gemini, and DeepSeek. So far, they've been very helpful for me in so many areas. Mostly in building softwares, but they are too global in scope that their training are so helpful to so many people and so many subjects.

How I used Google Sheets and Apps Script

Google Sheet is one of the most powerful spreadsheet application that exists online, rivaling with Microsoft's Excel. One of the main strengths is its strong support for collaboration with other users, much easier and popular than collaboration tools with Microsoft Office. Aside from plain spreadsheet, it also supports extensions such as macro. If you are familiar with macros on other office tools, they work almost the same. However, the most extension I use and tinker with is the Apps Scipt . Apps Script Extension One of the challenges I faced recently is how do I track or monitor reports in our department if they are submitted on time or worst, forgotten due to lack of better monitoring tools. So I thought if there can be simple applications that can be deployed or use by a more general user to allow reminding periodically what reports are approaching due dates or those that are past dues. Then I looked for a way, instead of creating a full blown app from scratc...

Automate Sending Email with Apps Script and Google Sheet

Introduction It has been too long that many people uses Microsoft Excel in day-to-day computing tasks. It's so big that it almost resemble a programming language where non-technical people can create their own spreadsheet programs. It has many uses with just the default grid-type data entries. But Microsoft Office developers did not stopped there. They gave it more power by adding a scripting capability to it with VBA or Visual Basic for Applications. Most of the office apps of Microsoft has this VBA at their disposal but I most used it with Microsoft Excel. It was the most appropriate application for me to use it. But then come the big competition. I'll skip the open source apps that may compete with Microsoft Office and go directly with the big one. This is the Google Sheet from Google. Introducing Google Sheet Google Sheets is an online spreadsheet application that allows users to create, edit, and format spreadsheets to organize and analyze information....
